Maitama Linen: The Scandalous Lives of Abuja Elites

Description

Kemi, a mechanic, walks right into the seemingly lifeless body of Aisha Bashir as she opens her workshop on a rainy November morning. With a gunshot wound to the head and at the brink of death, Aisha lays still as she recounts all the salient moments that led her there. From meeting Zeebaby to her emancipation as the 'new girl', she would never have thought she would be holding on to her dear life on the floor of a mechanic’s workshop. While Aisha grapples with life, a whole world of chaos has befallen the once sleepy hills of Maitama. Like Beverly Hills, Maitama is the playground of the rich and powerful. Nestled on the hills of Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, she knows many secrets and could tell many tales of the scandalous elite who call her home. Salma, a Maitama trophy wife with a secret, inexplicably finds herself at the centre of an international drug ring after meeting a dashing young Turk - Altin. Her husband Tanko Danlami, a prominent businessman with a secret life of his own would set in motion a series of events which intersects their lives in dangerous and exciting ways. Maitama Linen tells a story that unravels and then entangles the lives of numerous characters, and while these stories are unique to these characters, there is a common scandalous thread unifying them all.

Review

I just love Nigerian books that are not about drama and tragedies. I remember there being a lot of hype around this book and I almost got it at a fair but I decided against it; a mistake. I gave it a try via a friend's library and it was such a refreshing read. The story exposing scandals and underground secrets and lifestyles of the people the public considers "the elites". Expect everything from drugs to sex and even murder.

As much as it is a story, with all the secrets being exposed and the rumours that have been coming out of Abuja online. You are inclined to believe that there are definitely people who live this way, it's not just artistic exaggeration.

My favourite character in this book is Salma, she stood for all she wanted and even got love at the end of the day. Then Farida was just a woman that needed more love and she had the sweetest heart out of all of them. Tanko deserved all he got and my heart goes out to Binta for what she would have to endure. It would have been nice to know how Salma handled her kid after she got better.

At the end of the day, the scandals were scandaling, even on an international level.
