The First 'ember' Month

The First 'ember' Month

For better or for worse; the suspense of my life

Ember months start in September to December and I think the term might be particular to Nigeria but I see why they are in a group. These are the months people are most social all over the country. I have no journal entry for September because frankly I just didn't have time for it. The last months of the year are generally my most social and this year didn't disappoint. This month had me in a state of eternal fatigue but also a type of self-inflicted fatigue so as much as I would love to complain about it, I can’t because at the end of the day, after everything, I go to bed knowing I made a change and somehow that makes up for everything.

This month the second edition of the bootcamp we have at FHCDI commenced and I had to be a pillar of society again. It’s quite funny when I think about it because people actually look at me and think I have my life together enough to help groom others😂; here we are though and I think I’m crushing it. Currently it has been 2 and half weeks of it going on and we are left with 1 and half weeks. I only hope we have piqued enough interest to be part of someone’s journey.

Still on community business, I decided to go for the SCA summit and travelled alone to a place farther than a 2-3 hour drive alone. I know how it sounds weird, a whole adult has never flown alone but it is what it is. Anyhoo, I found myself in Lagos alone and despite all the issues with flight delays, I actually had a nice time in the front row at the largest gathering of women in tech I have ever been to. Everyone was so nice and despite my particular character of never making friends when I go to places alone, I managed to make 3 connections and we’ll see how it goes from there. I’ll say this though and I think I’ve said it before, people-ing drains me like nothing else. After the summit on the 19th, I could barely keep my eyes open, I slept so early I even beat my standard bedtime.

Random but while cleaning and looking at old pictures, I cemented the understanding of how much I was loved as a kid because I saw pictures from a day I spent with my uncle. I remember that day being so much fun because it was my first time at any type of park and I got to run around. The National park and zoo was at its peak and we also had a mini picnic at millennium park. I don’t remember the year unfortunately but I’m sure I wouldn’t be past 8 years old. What struck me was the fact that my uncle and his friend cleared out a whole day to spend with a kid. No rushing, only encouragement to experience as many things as I could. I don’t think about that first trip to the FCT often but when I do, I just think, “No wonder I love my desserts, I was loved too”.

Moving back from the tangent, back to the north I came on the 20th, to continue all the stuff I was doing and trying my best not to be burnt out. I found a whole new love for my daily vertical drama updates but lost my anime and manga streak. With the number of hobbies I have, It’s often easy to pick some and drop some for extended periods of time. Speaking about hobbies, I decided to pause my Harry Potter reads and borrow a book from a friend titled, “Maitama Linen: The Scandalous Lives of Abuja Elites” and damn! There's SCANDAL. I’m a little slow in reading it because I only read when in transit to FHCDI and opt for vertical dramas at home but I’m moving well so it doesn’t matter in the end.

That’s really all there is to know about September, the first in the line of all the social activities the ember months have for me. I’ll just like to let you guys know that I only have one free Saturday in October. Social butterfly who? Social Butterfly DeeDee 😌.
