Even though it was pretending to be August, June still had to be June

Sometimes all your body needs is some troubleshooting and anti-virus to get back to premium working condition or at least what’s fairly premium for you. June was a sort of reset month for me and it being the middle of the year felt almost poetic, like I’m crossing over to the other page of a book (you know the smooth one we all prefer to write on, please tell me someone understands 👀). The middle of the year made me think about the past a lot and how sometimes you taste something so beautiful early in life but it only lasts for a little bit and you’re left wondering what could have been.

June started with work and a birthday on the project that I’ve been involved with and with max improvement. I wasn’t working on max but I was working and that’s all that matters. I noticed how I was fatigued but kept blaming it on procrastination. My sleeping pattern became messed up and I’m still trying to steer it back on track even though it improved. There isn’t much about the first week apart from doing some tasks and trying to be productive.

The second week brought community engagement. I participated in a menstrual hygiene awareness campaign at a secondary school in Suleja. It was a very productive day albeit tiring but the good type of tired, the kind that puts a smile on your face as you nap and rest. Talks like this are very important to young girls in the community as we try to tackle the problem of misinformation and period poverty that is getting rampant. Young girls need to be able to separate facts from traditional myths. The rest of the week was just normal stuff, doom scrolling, some job applications and writing the review for May 😶‍🌫️. Then the weekend ended with another birthday and as it turns out I know about 3 people that were born in June. I did not know it then but the next two weeks will be nerve wrecking.

The third week of June began the illness spree in the house. My fatigue multiplied and members of my family caught colds, had high fevers and whatnots. It was not scary but there’s a way the vibe just dulls. Everyone was running on 15-20 percent and we just shut ourselves in. Trips to the hospital became almost a daily occurrence especially since I had to be an escort on some trips. It was during one such trip that I decided to have a sugar test 👀. Don’t worry, I’m all good but I had a bit of a scare.

And then, apparently, my body saved itself for last as I was crowned with Nigeria’s favorite, malaria. It was apparently the double positive, don’t know what that means but it explained the fatigue and random muscle soreness that I blamed on Eid tasks. My days became 50% sleep and 50% chores because as bad as it was, I was the most healthy person in the house 😂. We really went through it.

Illness aside, June was actually a month of character reflection for me. I tried to pick apart some of my traits and the reason they might have come into existence and I came to understandable conclusions even though there’s no solution at the moment but “knowing the problem is part of the solution”, or whatever motivational speakers usually say.

That concludes June, the month every system in my house detected some sort of malware. I’m aware of how short this is (or maybe not) but from what you’ve read you know that I have no stories to tell except maybe that I went for a book review at SLS. The most productive part of June is the renewed commitment of achieving my final goal for the year and very early too. This is the first time I’m ticking off my goals list before the third quarter and I am quite excited for it. So as tiring and testing as June was, it gave me time to clear my head, think straight and light a fire of extroversion (or at least my version of it), I want to try out in July. If all goes as planned, I will have stories on the 31st of July. Ciao🙃.
